Silver Scenes Christmas Ornament Partridge in A Pear Tree
In Middle English pertriche 'partridge,' was derived from Perdix, one of Athene's sacred kings, thrown in the seas from a tower, and carried to heaven in the form of a bird by his goddess. He was the partridge, she the pear tree.
We know it better from the English Carol 12 Days of Christmas
From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England
were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has
two levels of meaning -- the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has
a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember:
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

A nice ornament based on the English carol Three Ships a sailing.
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning.
